New Old Sewing Machine

I went to my usual thrift store the other day and saw this. It's in terrible shape. But of course I bought it anyway for the great price of $29.99.
I love the decals, although some are completely rubbed off.
The reason I bought it was these great drawers. There was even the little sewing extras in one of them.
The veneer is falling apart. The cover is missing. But I love her anyway.I am going to call her Emsey (my great Grandmas name who made some of my quilts). She was born in 1872 so could very well have used a machine like this when she was a teen.
I called New Home and they will date your machine. This one is 1888. I was surprised that it was that old. I found an ad on the internet showing the modal. It originally was $60. I guess I got a bargain! For those of you with old Singer machines-they can date it to the exact day  and place where your machine was made if you have the modal number. Here's a link to the website to date machines.
I am going to take it apart carefully and revamp the drawers. Son will use the base to build his own table. I'll use each and every piece of pretty molding for something. I plan on cleaning up the head and displaying it in my craftroom. Here's a little card I found while going through paperwork.

I have been doing some genealogy and sorting paperwork and income taxes(Yuck). I plan on doing some crafting this week. I find myself getting caught up in other things and not being creative. But it's time! I love seeing all of your craftiness and projects out there. You are inspiring me to get going! We've had wonderful weather here-I hope you all in the snow and blizzards get some warmer weather soon. Have a wonderful and crafty week!
Leslie

  4. What a great find Leslie!! So cool that you found the old ad too. I have my grandmother's Singer treadle machine and treasure it. It's not fancy, but it's very special to me. Have fun with the genealogy... the taxes, not so much. :)

  8. Oh! What a looker that must have been when it was brand new! I love the paintings on old machines, so charming. I've seen people on blogs using old drawers for storage and it looks so great - yours are so nice, can't wait to see them.

Thanks so much for the info on dating machines, I'll look forward to finding out about my grandma's and my mom's.

ACK! Taxes! I have to do mine, my dad's estate, etc., plus gather all the info for the rental for the first time. WAH!

Today just went POOF - tomorrow I'm hoping to finally figure out my plan for my spoolie. I have too many ideas, which I suppose is better than none but sheesh.

Happy Easter crafting to you! xo

  9. I had a sewing machine similar to yours when we were first married. It was in bad condition, so I ended taking it apart, too. I saved the sewing machine and the drawers since it was my grandmothers, but I gave the base away for lack of space. I'm anxious to see what you do with yours. I've had the drawers out a dozen times, but for the life of me, I can't think what to do with them!

  11. What a wonderful old machine and sewing table! The drawers have a "tramp art" look. I have been putting tax prep off. I so dread this time of year. But it must be done. So if no one hears from me for over a week, you know I'm probably sitting at the dining table with my calculator, buried in receipts, getting everything ready for Uncle Sam.

  13. I've seen such unique things done with the iron pedastal and drawers, but wonder what you will do with the machine. I do love the name, "New Home" - and hopefully she will find one.

  14. Hi Leslie,
What a great find. In no time you will give your new machine a pretty new face. I have two treadles machines. One that looks much like yours and the other that is just the table. I love using it for seasonal displays. It sits in my kitchen.
I look forward to visiting and seeing your "after".
Thank you so much for stopping by and for your kind comments, my friend.
    Blessings,
    Carolynn xoxo

  15. Hi, L!
My email is messed up right now. Can't send anything out. I wrote you about responding about The Winchester Man, but you never got it. (Seems me and you are the only ones who remember him, hehehehe.
Love the sewing machine. My grandmother had one kinda like that, and we loved to play with the foot pedal, but she didn't like us to.

  18. Leslie you have found a diamond in the rough. I love her. I am so in love with old machines. There is one in my living room that I bought for a bargin. We went to Montana one year and these machines where in every antique store at reasonable prices. Some store owners where telling us that people just left them behind. I can not imagine ever leaving my sewing machine behind.
Hope you are having a great weekend.
    Hugs

  19. That is VERY similar to the old New Home sewing machine table I have! Love it! Back in the 70's, my Daddy took the non-working machine out and put anew top on the table. I have used it ever since, alternately as a desk, vanity table, etc. Right now it sits in our den holding family photos and a CD player. I will always treasure it because Daddy "made" it for me. I'm glad you didn't pass up Emsey.
